Anxiety Therapy
I see women in therapy who never imagined anxiety could impact so many areas of their life. Whether that's daily functioning or a work presentation, it can be overwhelming to have ruminations or fears about making mistakes.
Rather than rush to solve what appears to be the problem, I ask direct questions, like: "What if you made a mistake, what might happen then?"
Once the mistake stops being the focus, it becomes possible to look at what’s actually driving the fear. This is where depth therapy, psychodynamic therapy, comes in.
Psychodynamic therapy provides a way to talk about the past and present. It offers people the opportunity to work through themes that reoccur in life, provides language for painful emotions, and makes room so that a cognitive technique or a mindfulness skill can be utilized more effectively.
Anxiety can present in different ways…
Do critical thoughts spiral into something bigger? A passing worry about being judged in a meeting turns into days of dread, replaying the same thoughts before it has even happened, until it interferes with sleep the night before a big work summit.
Does the fear of having a panic attack prevent travel? Just the idea of being in an enclosed space can trigger anxiety. Over time, it can restrict the ability to work in jobs that require frequent travel or to vacation with the family.
Does social anxiety make it impossible to attend events? Maybe it is the company party or Thanksgiving dinner. Social anxiety can generate "what if" thoughts that feel very real and make it difficult to think about anything else.
If some of this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it is not something you have to keep managing on your own. These patterns can shift. That is the work, and it is possible.
How to get started
Starting therapy can feel difficult. To make it easier, I offer a 15-minute free phone consultation. There is no pressure. There is no obligation to continue. It is an opportunity to meet together.
